The historical cell of Saint George Faneromenos is at the upper Pantocratoric Kapsala of Mount Athos. The Great Martyr Saint George appeared before the bandits to prevent the robbery that they were going to commit in the Cell. We meet this appellation of Faneromenos (“the one who appeared”) in a document bearing the Imperial signet of Manuel Palaiologos (14th century). According to the verbal and written tradition, Saint George appeared before Stamatis, chief of robbers, during the time of the Hellenic Revolution (1821). The founders of the recent church are the Holy Anchorites Hatzigiorgides. The Elders Evlogios, Pachomios and Georgios reached to great spiritual experiences inside the Cell. After Elder Georgios passed away (1982) the Cell remained unoccupied for twenty years. Unfortunately the cells collapsed, but with the assistance of the Greek and Greek-Cypriot brothers, the church has been reconstructed from the foundations during the last three years. Frankincense is produced in the Cell, where CDs and books are also sold, to support the various constructional works and the needs of the church and the cell.
